Here's a clip from the 1990 Tony Awards. Michael Jeter and Brent Barrett perform "We'll Take a Glass Together" from the musical "Grand Hotel." I actually saw this show (with Jeter) on Broadway in my callow youth, and while the show itself was only mediocre, this number was a true show-stopper. The combination of Tommy Tune's choreography and Jeter's brilliant and exuberant dancing was so perfect that even someone as ignorant of choreography and dance as I could recognize it as something special.
Dance -- especially dance for the stage -- has always seemed to me one of the most ephemeral of art forms, because it can so rarely outlive the performers who embody it. Sadly, Michael Jeter is gone. But his dance lives on.
