Crucial jobs report for September may favor Bush in debate
The jobs report that is to be released on Friday is looming very large for the presidential debate scheduled for that evening. This Reuters story seems to indicate that the report will favor Bush rather than Kerry.
A couple of excerpts:
The memo from the president's Council of Economic Advisers estimates that payroll figures for the 12-month period (March 2003 to March 2004) will be revised upward by 288,000 jobs, the economists said. Current data shows just 709,000 jobs were created in that stretch.
Wall Street economists expect non-farm employers added 148,000 workers to payrolls in September.
If these numbers are reasonably accurate, Bush will be able to claim the addition of roughly 436,000 new jobs based on this one report. Such numbers would be devastating to Kerry and severely undermine his attempt in the debate to cite Bush's lack of job creation.
