David Frum on free speech and liberal hypocrisy
Or -- to put it in Reynoldsian terms -- more attempts to crush dissent in John Ascroft's America. More on hypocrisy and double standards here.
Bonus Quiz Question.
It's been my impression (I know, impressions aren't scientific, but this is a strong impression) that many of the people that I hear ranting and frothing at the mouth about John Ashcroft's "shredding of the constitution" -- besides being unable to speak without stringing together hackneyed slogans -- don't really know much about the dreaded Patriot Act, for instance, and know even less about John Ashcroft himself. Assuming that my premise is correct, what do you think is the real source of the left's hatred of Ashcroft? I have my own ideas, but I'd like to hear yours. Anyone who is interested may answer in the comments section.

This is a guess, but I'm hoping for bonus points:
Ashcroft is like a voodoo doll the left uses to get at Bush. They can attack him without seeming to attack the president. Ashcroft is too effective (scares those "tolerant" liberals and libertarians) and too Christian (scares atheists, "moderate Chistians" [CINOs] and non-Christians). The left wants to cripple the GOP in general and Bush in particular, so they try to take out the most effective people in government (or keep them out, in the case of nominated judges).
Did I win any points?

Oh, and thanks for the links. Very interesting reading. I'm waiting to hear the left call Redford on the carpet and DEMAND he give the President equal time.

You win all the points, Conservative. I was thinking in rather simplistic terms, along the lines of too Christian, but your analysis encompasses that idea and adds a few more of your own.
1. He is a man of faith who doesn't try to hide it.
2. He is conservative and subject to attack by those on the more shrill side.
3. He has a stiff, rather than a gregarious persona.
4. He's from Missouri and not named Gephardt.
There's a rumor, Convervative in VA, that you're W himself. Come clean. It's you isn't it, W?
I'm afraid I don't speak Texan. For example, today on Drudge I learned that
"I'm going to be real positive, while I keep my foot on John Kerry's throat."
is Texan for
"I'm not goint to let him dodge his liberal record."
Now, I like that a lot, but I could not have made that translation.
