Desert Island. . One Book. . What would it be?

For me, it would be To Kill A Mockingbird. Along with my father, a retired judge and old school lawyer before that, I would have to say that the second most important influence in making me want to become a lawyer was Atticus Finch. Harper Lee's brilliant first and only work was selected as the best novel of the century by librarians around the country in a 1999 survey by Library Journal. Now who am I to argue with a bunch of librarians?
And if I had to pick one performance by one actor in a drama. . would I be far off going with Gregory Peck in the movie adaptation?
I bring this up because the LA Times did. Harper Lee, the author of this singular work, wrote no other novels and became reclusive. But the family of Gregory Peck got her to come out to LA to participate in a library fundraiser. She took the train. They should have carried her here.

Shoot, this is not a good question. To be smart about it, you want something on surviving on a desert island. To keep from being bored, you want something you won't ever finish, like the Bible or War & Peace. A better question is, what's your favorite book? But that's too hard to answer.

One that I loved was The Warrior's Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold. It was the first time I'd ever heard of a "space opera." SF fans will love it.

Wonderdog, for you I recommend Hank the Cowdog. A great series not only for the kids, but for the parents who read the books to them. The best part is faking a Texas ranch accent when you're reading the stories out loud.
