I'll Play

A correspondent of Terry Teachout's suggests a fun parlor game: what great artists (or famous people) could, and couldn't, say the sentence “I am ridiculous”?

Here are my suggestions:

George Eliot, no; Jane Austen, yes.
Nabokov, no; Joyce, yes.
Philip Roth, no; Saul Bellow, yes.
Hawthorne, no; Melville, yes.
Hiss, no; Chambers, yes.
Michael Jackson, no; Elvis, yes.
Ruskin, no; Wilde, yes.
Garfunkel, no; Simon, yes.

Clinton: Yes, followed by "not really."
George W: yes.

But I'd change Dostoevsky to: yes, no, yes, no, yes...
