Interesting Read

Laura Ingraham had the author of this book on her show today. A discussion of One Nation Under Therapy brought some interesting calls and a discussion about the "self esteem" movement and what it has wrought:
1. Kids losing interest in T ball because they don't get the point when they don't keep score.
2. Baseball games where there are no strikes.
3. Tug of War replaced with Tug of Peace.
4. Girl Scout merit badges for self esteem.
5. Teachers who aren't allowed to correct spelling
6. Teachers who are told to use lavender ink to grade because Red is too threatening.
AARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Thursday's WSJ had a piece by Jeff Zaslow called Saying 'No' to the Grief Industry: The
Case for Not Facing Death Head On
.

A subscription probably required, so I'll include a couple of quotes:

... some researchers say it's time for a clear-eyed reassessment of grief in America. "Research shows pretty clearly that the more people focus on the loss, the more prolonged their grief will be," says George Bonanno, associate professor of clinical psychology at Columbia University's Teachers College.

[snip]

Dr. Bonanno has compiled data from his studies and scores of others, and all reach similar conclusions: that grief treatments are mostly ineffective, and that humans are generally resilient. His research, presented last week at the American Psychiatric Association's annual meeting, finds that about 85% of people adequately cope with their grief within a year or two. Most don't need professional help or prolonged "grief work."
