For Geeks Only

Caution: You are about to enter a Tolkien-related post. If you are made uncomfortable by elves, dwarves, hobbits, swords, wizards, and furry feet, turn back now.

Okay, now . . . apropos of nothing, here are some of my favorite moments from The Lord of the Rings:

* The first appearance of the Black Riders.

* Frodo's defiance of the Black Riders at the ford, just before they reach Rivendell: "By Elbereth and Luthien the Fair . . . you shall have neither the ring nor me!"

* Frodo's last glimpse of Lorien and Galadriel: "Then it seeme to Frodo that she lifted her arms in a final farewell, and far but piercing-clear on the following wind came the sound of her voice singing. But now she sang in the ancient tongue of the Elves beyond the Sea, and he did not understand the words: fair was the music, but it did not comfort him."

* The conversation between Aragorn and Eomer at their first meeting.

* Theoden riding out at Helm's Deep: "And with that the king came. His horse was as white as snow, golden was his shield, and his spear was long. At his right hand was Aragorn, Elendil's heir, behind him rode the lord of the House of Eorl the Young. Light sprang in the sky. Night departed."

* Theoden's rejection of Saruman's offer of "peace."

* Sam's battle with Shelob.

* Gandalf's confrontation with the Witch-King and its interruption:

"Gandalf did not move. And in that very moment, away behind in some courtyard of the City, a cock crowed. Shrill and clear he crowed, recking nothing of wizardry or war, welcoming only the morning that in the sky far above the shadows of death was coming with the dawn.

And as if in answer there came from far away another note. Horns, horns, horns. In dark Mindolluin's sides they dimly echoed. Great horns of the North wildly blowing. Rohan had come at last."

* The Ride of the Rohirrim.

* Eowyn and Merry's encounter with the Witch-King, and Eowyn's reply to the Witch-King's boast that no living man may hinder him: "But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Eowyn I am, Eomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him."

* Merry's farewell to Theoden: "Forgive me, lord, ... if I broke your command, and yet have done no more in your service than to weep at our parting."

* The arrival -- at the Pelennor Fields and displaying the banner of the King -- of "Aragorn son of Arathorn, Elessar, Isildur's heir, out of the Paths of the Dead, borne upon a wind from the Sea ..."

* Gollum's attempt to caress the sleeping Frodo.

* Frodo's good-bye to Sam.

Anything I've forgotten?
