Harriet Miers
Well, the new fall TV shows look pretty disappointing as usual, but there is one show that promises to hold interest and drama, and that will be the confirmation hearings of Harriet Miers, for the position of Associate Justice Of The Supreme Court Of The United States. The loudest of objection is being heard from the far right. This article brings into doubt if she will be confirmed.
My take on her? It is sort of a defining issue. Are you a conservative Republican or a moderate one? I'm a bit of both. I would have preferred one of the many names that were suggested and let the chips fall where they may (Hell, he could have had some fun renominating Bork). I neither endorse nor curse this nomination, but have taken a wait and see attitude. As one caller to a radio show stated in responding to the ruckus on the right, "Bush makes great judicial appointments, but looks bad doing it". Bush has done nothing to damage my trust in him, and I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt in nominating someone whom he knows so well.
Antonin Scalia was confirmed 99-0. What would that vote be today in our polarized Senate.
