Stop the Quarrel

This author suggests that we stop the Lennon v. McCartney squabble.
Nonsense. Bring it on.
John rules!

Interesting article.

And by the way, Paul rules. *And* he's the cute one.

Paul only "rules" because the true king was assasinated.

Assassinated? Like he was Abraham Lincoln or JFK or something? Chris Rock does a joke about people who say Tupac what's-his-name was assassinated that I can't repeat here.

I think that it is the proper term to descirbe his murder:
'To murder (a prominent person) by surprise attack, as for political reasons.'

None of them rule. They all suck. I hate the Beatles. They're a 3 chord garage band that happened to be in the right place at the right time. There wasn't a lot of talented competition in the sixties, let's face it. They had good publicity and a couple of catchy tunes (see also - Madonna) and rode that wave all the way to legend status. Talk about the Emperor's new clothes...they sat around writing the worst drivel they could knowing that the adoring masses would lap it up without question. Please friends, put down the White Album and back away slowly.

Dirtbiker -- LOL! Now that's how true iconoclasm is done.

Just for the record, while I do *like* the Beatles and Paul McCartney, I don't think Paul rules in any absolute sense -- just in relation to John.

Can we stop the hating?
All You Need Is Love.
Comparing the Beatles to Madonna is like comparing John Paul II to defrocked priests. The Beatles were talented musicians who worked ther buttocks off in the bars of Hamburg to hone their skills. They were a tremendously talented band and I'm proud that my daughters appreciate their music.
So they aren't everybody's cup of tea. If anyone disagrees with me, they can just go sing "I'm A Loser". OK, It's been a hard day's night and I'm going for a glass of red.

Inasmuch as any musician (or group) deserves praise: The Beatles do. The Fab Four may have been in the right place at the right time, but their influence has endured. The Beatles have more number one singles than any other band in history, they have more number one albums, in eight short years they managed to produce over 200 songs and almost every new song expanded the overall variety and scope of their talent.

The Beatles seldom repeated themselves. The Beatles revolutionized studio recording methods and pioneered the music video. Perhaps the biggest reason The Beatles remain so lionized is that they "died" young, calling it quits when they were on top of the world.

The Beatles' influence in music is wide-spread. The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Simon & Garfunkel, James Taylor, Elton John, Led Zeppelin, the Beach Boys, Crosby Stills & Nash and countless others have all said they are influenced by The Beatles.

Try watching television one night and count the number of times a Beatles song is played. I suspect it’s more often than you'd think. The Beatles’ music permeates modern society almost as much today as it did in the 60’s.

Maybe the most telling tribute to The Beatles is that they continue to be a favorite of younger people (like me?). The Beatles had split before I was born. In spite of not having produced anything for 35 years, The Beatles remain a major part of modern American culture.

From your keyboard to God's ear, shc. The problem here is that Top Dog was born too early and Dirtbiker was born too late to truly appreciate the Fab Four. I'll call then Bitter Beatle Bookends.

I can identify with Topdog here. He grew up with Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ella,Doris Day, Billie, Gershwin,Porter,Mercer, the Great American Songbook, etc. After that, The Beatles are pretty thin gruel.

Oh put down the kool aid cup, Kate Marie. "Thin Gruel"? Hardly. Sinatra did what? Cover other people's songs, whereas the Beatles started out that way and then wrote some of the most memorable songs of the 60's and 70's. Doris Day? Eat another Daisy, won't you? The Beatles hold their own very well. Lennon and McCarthy, baby. And good old George wasn't half bad either. Now Ringo WAS in the right place at the right time, for sure.

It is weird to have a young teen come to you all excited and say she heard a really cool song today and she starts humming a tune you recognize as more than twice as old as she is -- a Beatles song, of course.

Yeah, Sinatra covered other people's songs like Glenn Gould covered other people's music.

McCartney is a nice melodist. I actually like The Beatles. But Gershwin and Porter they ain't.
