What The World. . . Needs Now. . . . .

. . . is a new album by a 77 year old composer who has won six Grammys and three Oscars and has collaborated on 48 Top 10 hits. This album should have raw languange that causes the record label to ask the artist to tone it down, and it should feature hip-hop beats crafted by Dr. Dre on three tracks, policically charged lyrics, and a bruising attack on the Bush Administration.
Say it ain't so, Burt Bacharach!

That generation just can't shuffle quietly into oblivion, can it?

What's pathetic is how poorly these "artists" understand their significance in the grand scheme of things. Burt Bacharach wrote some very nice pop music -- music that my very young daughters love to sing and dance to, and they're more discriminating than you might think -- and yet he seems to think he's, I dunno, . . . Beethoven? Except I'm sure Beethoven (or Bach, or Mozart, or Johnny Mercer, for goodness'sake)never wrote music to "make a statement." Who exactly *does* he think he is? Does he imagine there's a single demographic (including the praisers-of-their-own-past baby boomers) that is abuzz with the news of his "daring" new protest album? Give me a freakin' break.

Jeff, looks like you had the same thought I did at the same moment, but you said it much more succinctly.

He should have been hit by a truck 10 years ago.

Stewdog, would that be before or after "That's What Friends Are For"?

I remember a while back when Pat Boone came out with a "metal album". He was trying to reach out to another generation, and in doing so, alientated the white buckskin crowd who bought his house for him.
He just looked silly doing it.

Pat Boone's metal album was a joke, though, and he admitted it. When he did those songs on talk shows, he wore the usual biker get-up--plus his trademarked white shoes. :)

I have lots of oldsters in my family, and all I'll say is, when a 77-year-old decides for the first time in his life that he has political opinions, the results are never pretty.
