First, I thought ...
... well, maybe Woody Allen isn't a complete idiot. I mean, he admits to being a mediocre filmmaker. But then he chooses the three films of his that are "good" by anybody's standards: Match Point, his most recent; Husbands and Wives (!); and The Purple Rose of Cairo. So Allen is apparently not only a mediocre filmmaker, but a mediocre film critic as well.
For the record, here are my nominations for Allen films that deserve inclusion on the "good by any standards" list:
Broadway Danny Rose
Hannah and her Sisters
Annie Hall
Crimes and Misdemeanors [Whether you think this one is great depends, for me, on whether one views the Alan Alda character as ultimately sympathetic, which I do. It's typical, isn't it, that Allen has no trouble establishing sympathy for the murderer played by Martin Landau, but it's a closer call whether he manages to create sympathy for the character that is most antipathetic to his cinematic alter ego?]
