Neil Young Drinks The Kool-Aid

I have always loved Neil Young. He isn't much to look at, but his music is great. A unique artist. You can "name that tune" after one or two notes on his guitar or one syllable of that high voice.
But now, Neil has decided that it is time to make an album devoted to trashing George Bush. I guess we can call this the Burt Bacharach Effect. Or you can say he has Gone Dixie Chick.

Guess what Neil. Not that you care, but most of your fans who followed you in the 60's and 70's and who loved your rebirth with Harvest Moon have grown up, pay mortgages, and many of us support this president. I'll be very interested in how poorly your manifesto sells.

Four years from now it will be an extreme embarrassment and Young will defend it by saying something like, "At the time, it reflected a real frustration in the American psyche."

"Uh huh", the prevailing wisdom will say. "What say you now song boy?"

Agreed. Of course Young has the right to make such an album, just as it's my right to "dissent" as to its message.

Thank you for pointing out the greatness of America.

Question for you, Niagaradem:

Do you think the people of Iraq should be able to enjoy those same freedoms? It would seem that Mr. Young does not. So tell me again how a cynical message which undermines freedom and democracy for a ravaged and oppressed people and at the same time makes America less safe is "inspirational"?

Niagradem, Welcome to Rumpus, where we always welcome dissenting opinions.
I've heard of the Bill of Rights. I'm not a government attempting to interfere with Neil's right of free speech, which he greatly enjoys in this country even though he isn't even an American citizen, just a fan who will exercise his right of free commerce and refuse to buy his new CD. The point I was trying to make has already been well covered by Laura in "Shut Up And Sing". I'm not into blind allegeince and I respect dissent. But I look to find it on blogs and in papers. When I pick up a CD of a great musician, I hope to hear great music and I for one don't appreciate the trend of musicians deciding that they know all the answers and are the great political thinkers of our time.
I don't think "Most" of Neil's fans will welcome this album. I would welcome another masterpiece like "Harvest Moon". His song "War Of Man" does a great job of pointing out the unfortunate consequences of war. . that is a far cry from joining the "Bush is an Idiot Crowd".
I must take issue with the suggestion that Young's ad hominum album attack on the president represents another voice for the silent majority. While the Polls expectedly show a decline in support for a lame duck president who has to deal with the one sided coverage of Iraq by the main stream media, the shreiking of the Pelosis, Kennedys, Bidens, UC Santa Cruz Kids, Michael Moore, St. Cindy Sheehan, and the Daily Kos Krew is hardly silence.
I want better things for my family too. I just don't think Al Gore and Dick Durbin can deliver them.
