Looking for The Father of Europe in all the wrong places . . .
My favorite chest-thumping medievalist has been wondering when we're going to see Charlemagne on the Sci-Fi Channel, riding a giant scorpion and battling Nazi super-mutants on the slopes of a fiery volcano. Well, he and his bellicose friends have been looking in all the wrong places. Think about it. Carolus Magnus had a pretty darned eventful life. If he's going to be associated with any time-traveling, my guess is he's going to be the one doing the traveling, and he's going to want to avoid both scorpions and Nazis, and -- like
another hero choosing his next life -- settle down in some unassuming corner of the world, among ordinary citizens, and serve up some Eggihard stew.
Sure, a vestige of vanity might tempt him to savor a memento of his past glory, but in the spirit of keepin' it real, he'll place it directly across from the restroom doors.
Ye seekers of Charlemagne, turn thine eyes away from the Sci-Fi Channel and behold the Next Food Network Star. Forget the giant scorpions, and bring on the Charlemagne Soup. BAM!

There was a great Steely Dan Song "Kid Charlemagne" on the Royal Scam Album. But it is about a drug dealer. Probably not the same guy.
KM, are you anywhere near Topeka, Kansas? My older brother lives there.

Hi Jeffery,
We're in the "greater Kansas City" area. We're in Olathe right now, but we'll be in Leawood, KS -- very near the state line with Missouri -- when we move into the new (or new to us) house. I'm ashamed to say I'm still pretty ignorant of the geography here. Is Topeka in western Kansas? In any event, it can't be *too* far away. It'd be a real treat to meet a member of the Hodges family someday.
KM, I was trying to recall where I posted this query.
My brother Pat (but seems to go by "Brad" these days) lives in Topeka, which is in northeast Kansas.
If Wikipedia can be trusted, the city would seem to be about 60 miles west of Kansas City.
So not too far away...
