Like Mike Huckaby, I am willing to cut BO a little bit of slack and accept him at his word that his intent wansn't to slime the VP (or McCain) with his comments. However, it does strain credulty when his audience certainly took it as referring to her lipstick line, and he has a history of being inappropriately flip (the finger to Hillary). But it shows an appaling lack of tack, judgment, and maturity to use that metaphor in this context, so close to the Palan speech, and when LIPSTICK has come to be associated with the Governor!
What if McCain had innocently thrown out "let's call a spade a spade", with no ill will directed to anyone. He would be crucified. People on both sides of the aisle are just very sensitive these days, and a leader chooses his, OR HER, words with caution and thought.

Yeah, I'm willing to entertain the possibility that he didn't mean to make the comparison, or that he didn't mean for the audience to infer anything from his comment, but then all I'm left with is that it was a remarkably stupid thing to say. And for someone whose supporters have been going around saying that Obama's experience for the presidency includes running a great campaign, . . . well, this "gaffe" -- among others-- kind of damages that particular talking point.
