"The glamour is mine! Mine! All mine! Give it back to me! Media, make her give it back!"

The "lipstick on a pig" comment isn't even the worst of Obama's gaffe, in my opinion. His attempt to frame Palin as merely an "interesting story" and "mother of five," bless her heart, is at once condescending, arguably sexist, and downright ironic. It underlines the uncomfortable fact that -- whatever substance the Obama campaign thinks it's been running on -- it's precisely the "interesting story," "the "charisma," the glamour, of the Obama campaign that has appealed to those dreaded independents all along.

It really is remarkable for the top of the Democrat ticket to feel compelled to attack the bottom of the Republican ticket in this fashion, but you can see the logic of it. As Ann Althouse has pointed out, McCain/Palin stole their meme, and they wa-ha-hant it back.

ADDED: Hugh Hewitt has the video.
