Regarding Terri Schiavo

Tomorrow at 1:00 pm eastern time, the feeding tube that is sustaining Terri Schiavo's life will be removed pursuant to a court order, whereupon she will slowly die of starvation and dehydration. Accounts from medical personnel who have seen this type of death all agree -- it is not a pleasant way to die.

Her mother and father want her to live. Her "husband" wants her to die. Her mother and father wish to care for her and sustain as much of the life they have created, loved and nourished as they possibly can. Her "husband," who never visits Terri and is no longer a part of her life, wants her to die.

There is evidence that Terri Schiavo is not in a vegetative state. Dozens of neurologists agree, many by affidavit that Terri's condition is not indicative of PVS (persistent vegetative state).

Any lay person who has seen the tv footage of Terri is aware that she is able to at least follow a balloon with her eyes and share a smile with family and friends.

There is speculation that Terri's "husband" will receive a substantial insurance reward if Terri is to die.

Terri's parents are willing to take her home if necessary and care for their child as best they can.

A person who did to their dog what the state is about to do to Terri Schiavo could be prosecuted for a crime.

Where are all the candlelight vigil protestors who weep and sing for murderers on death row?
Why do the songs tend to fall silent when the life in the balance is an innocent one? Whether it be the silent scream of a child in the womb or the imponderable despair of a patient who cannot speak their soul's desire?

Were I her father, I would lay fists on anyone who dared move toward that tube...

I pray for Terri Schiavo and her family. I pray that this won't happen in the name of the law.

Update: Powerline has powerful comments from the brilliant David Gelertner on the Schiavo case.

Notice the Orwellian euphemism -- she is going to "have her feeding tube removed". Let's be clear about it, folks. She is going to be starved to death. If you can't bring yourself to say it, how can you bring yourself to do it?
