He is gone, but he was grrrrrrrrrreat!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An iconic voice of my youth has been silenced. Thurl Ravenscroft is dead at 91. He will be best remembered as the voice of Tony The Tiger for Kellog's Frosted Flakes, but his voice was heard in many other places. How about the Mr. Grinch song? That was his voice. Same with the singing mouse in Cinderella and the crooning dog in Lady and the Tramp.
He was also a WWII navigator who flew 150 Atlantic crossings. He helped fly Winston Churchill to Algiers. Bravo! A life well lived.

Easily the most recognizable voice throughout my childhood. In Disney films, commercials, occasionally a movie (South Pacific - "there is absolutely nothing like the frame...of a daaaaame")you heard that voice and instantly recalled everything you ever heard him sing. At Disneyland, The Enchanted Tiki Room and Haunted Mansion (I'm sure there are more) are enhanced by his contributions. James Lileks also toasts him (and BTW, isn't Thurl Ravenscroft the coolest name ever?) with a link to a swingin' sixties duet. I doubt we'll hear this type of voice again soon. Not that they don't exist. Advertising execs, movie makers or whoever puts out stuff for public consumption apparently don't understand the draw. He will be missed.

I agree. The preferred voice seems to be a 20 something "cool" slacker with slight congestion.

(Note: substitute current slang for "cool.")
