From Atlantica. . .

To Pacifica. I was making myself crazy listening to KPFK 90.7 in LA this morning. To their credit, our local voice of Hanoi seems to be the only station with live coverage of the Roberts confirmation hearings. However, their pre show got out of hand. These people don't realize how funny they are.

A question was raised in the pre show re how could the confirmation of the Evildoer Roberts have impact on our lives. The response went something like this: "Well, if we had another 9/11, and Bush really went over the deep end, he could declare that it is treason to criticize the President and then we at KPFK could be thrown in jail for doing that".

OK, put down the Dixie Cups. You've had enough Kool-Aid.

It's really fascinating to me how much the most extreme leftists rely on that fantasy of persecution. They construct opposing viewpoints (of Roberts, for instance) as violent and agressive, and their "dissent" thereby becomes "courageous," instead of feeble, uninformed, and irrational. If we ever had a truly fascist/totalitarian movement in this country, these guys would be the first to proclaim their love of Big Brother -- and not *one* of them would ever have to see the inside of Room 101. But this fantasy that they've constructed allows them to play the part of courageous dissent, without having to recognize the uncomfortable fact that they have haven't had (and never will have) to pay the price that truly courageous dissent requires.
