Why Two K?

When I heard on the radio yesterday that the 2000th American serviceperson had died in Vietnam, er. . Iraq. . .I braced myself for the coming LA Times headline. They did not disappoint, blaring that fact out in large bold letters. They are predictable, if nothing else.
