Proto-call

The White House explained today that its reference to the anthem of visiting state leader Hu Jintao as that of the "Republic of China" was not, in fact, a gaffe, but part of a new policy to utilise more historically authentic names for foreign nations. In that vein Germany will be referred to as the Holy Roman Empire, Thailand as the Kingdom of Siam, and Great Britain as The Realme of King Arthur and His Knights of the Rounde Table. France will still be called France, but in State Department internal documents it will be referred to as "Mordor."

Can we go back to East and West Pakistan? Or do we call them both India? Will Iran be part of the Axis of Evil when it's called Persia? Can we dump all those hard to spell African country names and go back to calling them by their colonial names? And how far back do we go for names to use in the Holy Land?
