I heart Tom Cruise

If you'd asked me last year why I thought Tom Cruise was so good as the psychopath hit-man in Collateral, I would have answered, "Because he probably is a psychopath." In other words, I've never been a big Tom Cruise fan (though I did think he was better than Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man). But since the entertainment media have apparently turned against him, I've begun to feel a little sorry for him, partly because if there's anything I hate as much as vacuous, preening celebrities, it's the entertainment-industrial complex that creates and sustains them.

The thing I can't figure out is . . . why are they picking on him? I'm all for celebrity-bashing, and Cruise deserves it as much as any of them, but he doesn't seem to have committed any of the cardinal celebrity sins (a drug/alcohol/transvestite prostitute-related arrest, pedophilia, stealing another man's wife, having a bad fashion sense or hair day, lying to Oprah). I suppose he may have committed THE cardinal celebrity sin (making or being in a flop), but for so big and so consistently successful a star, they usually cut some slack. What gives? It's not like he drove with his infant daughter on his lap, or agreed to star in a viciously anti-Semitic and anti-American movie produced in Turkey, or named his kid something funny. Well, okay, he kind of did do that, but Suri is nowhere near as funny as Apple or Moxie Crimefighter. So he's a Scientologist? So what? Will they be pouncing on John Travolta next? Or on Esther the Kaballah-practicing, children's-book-writing diva? He hasn't even done anything that he can go on Oprah and make a convincingly sincere and tearful confession about. What's he going to confess to? Ruining Oprah's couch? Being mean to Brooke? I mean, they haven't set the stage for contrition, penance, and redemption with accompanying cover story in People.

So I'm reduced to feeling sorry for him, to almost pulling for him. But maybe that's exactly how Cruise and his Rovian handlers want me to feel.

I'm so confused. Must . . . resist . . . must . . . not . . . succumb . . . Help me! . . . I . . . I . . . I heart Tom Cruise.

Why is the media against him? Katie is young and cute, seems naive, and looks so "deer in the headlights" in some of the photos. He robs the cradle, gets her knocked up, goes on and on (and on) about how he loves her but doesn't marry her before the baby is born, and endangers her immortal soul by dragging her from Christianity into Scientology.

Hi CIV,

But do you think the media cares about them having a child out of wedlock of about Katie endangering her immortal soul?

I'm just sayin', is all.

Not really. I think it's just because she's young and cute and he's acting like a nutcase lately.

I don't even watch movies or follow celebs, but this TomKat thing is always in your face. It just looks like he is using his fame, fortune, power, and age to overwhelm a fragile young thing. But then I am a conservative geezer. What do I know?

You're being characteristically kind and charitable to Katie, CIV.

I'm just being my cynical, curmudgeonly self in wondering whether *she* gets anything out of the deal. After all, being Tom Cruise's wife didn't exactly hurt Nicole Kidman's career.

On the other hand, I'm *not* defending Tom Cruise. This post was mostly for fun.

And I thought every might get a kick out of the Nick Nolte mug shot. :)

Are they REALLY being so hard on him?...how much would it cost to GET this kind of publicity you think?..."Ms."Cruise may be weird, and not eveyones cup of tea these days....but never, ever, doubt that every single move he makes is well thought out and calculated to give him the exact publicity and attention that is the Goal he is trying to attain.

TP, you're part of the Rovian plot, aren't you? Because the more you harsh on him, the more I just want to hug him and tell him everything's going to be all right.:)

KM, I can't say that I've gone so far as to heart Mr. Cruise but, as whacky as the guy is, I do believe he's one of the few celebrities on record as supporting the war in Iraq...

So...*that's* good.
