Didn't Yeats say something similar? I'm not remembering exactly and I'm too lazy to look it up but it goes something like ... "the best lack all conviction and the worst are filled with a passionate intensity."
I like that better than Russell's formulation, because it suggests that one's stupidity or intelligence -- rather than determining which of those courses one chooses -- are *defined by* which of those courses you choose.
But I'm kind of doubtful whether that makes any sense. I could be wrong. :)
