Pop Goes Broadway

First there was "Mama Mia," the hit broadway musical based on the songs of ABBA. Then there was "Moving Out," the Billy Joel musical. "Good Vibrations," the Beach Boys musical and a John Lennon (now in production) musical soon followed. Today the Great White Way was electrified by the news of the next pop-music stage sensation: "Muskrat Love," a show built around the hit songs of The Captain and Tenille. Kristin Chenoweth, hot off her rave-reviewed turn as Glinda in "Wicked," will headline as Muskrat Susie. Jason Alexander, returning to the musical theater after several post-Seinfeld TV and film triumphs, will star opposite as Muskrat Sam. This promises to be theater to rival the Bard.

What's next? "The John Tesh Follies"? "Here Today, Gone To Yanni -- A Musical Extravaganza!"?

This and the frequency of revivals shows one thing: American musical comedy is dead. And Lloyd Weber, of course, was the undertaker.
