The Passionlessness of the Buddha

Fans of religious epic film will welcome the news of Hollywood's next venture into the genre: "The Passionlessness of the Buddha," to be produced and directed by Richard Gere. Gere's original conept was that the film be done entirely in ancient Pali without subtitles, but vernacular subtitles are being added to the theatrical cut after massive studio pressure. Already the film is stirring controversy in the international Jain community. Dr. Chandra Ahimsa, president of the JADL (Jain Anti-defamation League) said in a recent press conference, "Every sensitive person knows that the story of the Buddha's enlightenment is rife with anti-Jain invective. If Mr. Gere goes ahead with this project it will turn back the clock on Buddhist-Jain relations by three kalpas." Mr. Gere could not be reached for comment.

Is anyone surprised by this controversy? The Jain community has had it in for Gere ever since that whole "cruelty to gerbils" thing.

Gere turned the clock back on gerbils by a generation. A once proud and emerging rodent culture was once again reduced to the loathing and mocking status known only to the rat.
