Yeah, that quote is striking, Rose. In the prologue to Witness, Whittaker Chambers, attempting to describe the appeal of Communism, said it provided its adherents with a "reason to live and a reason to die." I think some of the same impulses motivate Western "converts" to Islamism, though maybe these new young "radicals" can't quite articulate the spiritual crisis they're responding to.
