The Bill Bennett Brouhaha
It's Friday afternoon, and I'm too tired to say anything coherent about the Bill Bennett thing. I suggest you read this excellent post by Jeff Goldstein at Protein Wisdom. Here's a follow-up, of sorts. (I think Goldstein is being rather niggardly in his interpretation of John Merrick, don't you?)

Kate Marie, I am surprised to see you using the "N" word. Don't you know that can get you fired?
It is a shame that we must be so careful with words, even though they are the right and correct ones. For example, one might be walking his female dog, with his actress wife, in a happy mood, yet not wanting to give money to the homeless:
"Although I was in a gay mood as I walked my bitch with my thesbian, in a fit of niggardliness, I refused a quarter into the street urchin's cup."
Fine for rumpus, but watch it on the Senate floor."
To me, the Bennett brouhaha highlights the extent to which the left is fighting old and useless battles. Bennett hasn't been in government for what, 15 years? Until yesterday, most people (including myself) probably didn't even know he had a radio show. I know the left would like to portray Bennett's prim, pompous moralizing as representative of all Republicans, but I think it's bad--and not just for the left--when people can't distinguish a serious, relevant political target from a has-been who uses a reductio ad absurdum argument.
