Out and about

Terry Teachout is getting tired of live performances of classical music -- and sounding a little like Glenn Gould -- in two recent posts.

Jeffery Hodges at Gypsy Scholar has posted a series of lovely and funny childhood reminiscences.

Jeff at Quid Nomen Illius writes about a visit to Serbia in 2003.

I like Ann Althouse, but she recently made some rather clumsy points about the distinction between legalizing same-sex marriage and legalizing polygamy; the comments to her two posts are fairly lively and interesting, and I think those commenters who argue against the distinction (or at least against the distinction Althouse wants to make) come out ahead.

For all you Crash and A Beautiful Mind haters out there, here's a chance to sound off about the ten worst Best Picture Winners.

I didn't last to the end of all the comments on the Althouse blog. Did anyone cover what to do with the excess men? One man taking several wives means that men with less to offer are without wives. Having about an equal number of men and women available for 2 person marriage will keep a society more stable.

I worry about all those Chinese men without wives (though because of abortion, not polygamy). Will their government wage a risky war (say, with Taiwan) to rid themselves of excess men? Single men's families are already stealing "wives" from nearby countries.

(Recall the story a few months back about "lost boys" expelled from a polygamous cult in Utah because there were "too many" males and the old coots wanted the young gals to themselves.)
