When It Was A Game

Caught the old HBO special by that name. Just awesome. If you are a baseball fan, a must see.

It's simply the best baseball documentary ever made. Some of it is sheer poetry; such as the slow-motion clips of past-era ballplayers in the past-era ritual of flinging their gloves back to their fielding positions as they head to the dugout after three outs. A ritual I never knew existed until I saw this documentary.

One of my favorite Films on Baseball...so wonderful to see color film of the 30's and 40's players and stadiums. I also loved that all the games are filmed in the DAY...not many night games back then and to see the crowds of men all wearing hats and ties and coats....classic indeed.

I have a number of 1953 Bowman Color baseball cards. They are really beautiful and the show had the same quality. . the soft color of the time. I love the shots of the old ballparks and seeing guys like Yogi and Stan when they were kids.

I remember the old color film clips. Particularly remember the "Gas House Gang" hamming it up with some baseball sleight of hand. Great stuff.
