Random observations from a bunch of sick people who have energy for little more than sleeping and taking turns choosing DVDs to watch

* Darth Vader takes a heckuva long time to decide to save Luke and redeem himself. I mean, come on. Shot of Luke being tortured by the Emperor. Shot of Darth Vader's mask staring at Luke. Shot of Emperor zapping Luke. Shot of Darth Vader's mask staring at the Emperor. Shot of Luke being electrocuted, pleading "Help me, Father!" Shot of Darth Vader's mask staring at Luke. Shot of Emperor cackling "Only now, at the end, do you understand!" Shot of Darth Vader's mask staring at the Emperor. Shot of Luke screaming in agony. Shot of Darth Vader's mask staring at Luke. Shot of Emperor sneering, "And now, young Skywalker, you will die!" Shot of Darth Vader's mask staring at the Emperor. And it certainly doesn't help that the image George Lucas has provided for what's going on behind the mask is that petulant, face-lowered, brows-knit, eyes-raised, Full Metal Jacket, Jr., stare of Annakin "Tiger Beat" Skywalker.

* The Fifth Element? In the immortal words of Beavis and Butthead . . heh, heh, it sucks. [No, the kids didn't watch this one.]

* We watched the recent remake of The Parent Trap, which I wanted to hate, but which ends up retaining some of the charm of the original, thanks to some likable actors. But how on earth does this story keep our good will? What the parents do to their children is so heinous as to preclude any sympathy for them or for what happens to them, yet we keep watching and rooting for the parents to get back together. Maybe it's that the twins' need to forgive their parents is so palpable, so understandable, despite the frothiness of the plot, that the audience is swept up in their plans. The unabashed way in which both movies identify with the girls' desire to reunite their family is actually rare in movies about "broken homes," and each movie's willingness to ratify the girls' fantasies about family "reunion" lends a poignance to the story that's out of proportion to its tone and presentation.

* I loved Scooby Doo when I was a kid. Now he and his DVD spawn have replaced the endless-loop-recording of Stevie Nicks's "Silent Night" in my current vision of the ninth circle of hell.

You must be the only person alive who doesn't know this, Temp -- Darth Vader has owed C3PO money for decades. Hence the avoidance.

I really like The Fifth Element--although I admit, I don't have any rational reason for doing so. It's incoherent, but it sure is colorful.

I loved the remake of Parent Trap. Linsey Lohan was cute and a good actress before she became tabloid fodder.
