Is America too Jesus-y?

So says Kathy Griffin, a possible replacement for Rosie O'Donnell on The View.

An excerpt:

In a recent interview with the British gay news service Pink News, Kathy Griffin said, “America has got very Jesus-y. And you know Jesus … Jesus didn’t like homosexuals!” She went on to attack American Christians saying, “Well these Christians, they gotta twist everything, its how they are, craaaazy fundamentalists!”

"America has got very Jesus-y"? Let's not get craaaaazy there, Kathy. I'd say America has only been "Jesus-y" since about the first continental congress.

By the way, I certainly could be wrong about this and I'm no biblical scholar, but I can think of nothing in the New Testament in which Jesus condemns homosexuality. I'm sure He's not an advocate but I don't think he rode around on hay carts with a baseball bat looking for some good time gay bashing either. So what the deuce is she talking about when she says, "And you know Jesus...Jesus didn't like homosexuals"?

Do you think the gay reporter from Pink News really knows Jesus? Do you think this Griffin chick does? She must know Christians, though, cuz she couldn't be more right about how they "twist everything." I was at mass last Sunday and I'm telling you, brother, it was nothing but Chubby Checker, baby.

Do you think Ms. Griffin knows what a secular fundamentalist is?

She's obviously never heard of the "Jesusy' Ann Lamott."

Griffin is right, there is entirely too much Jesus-lovin' going on in this country.

Oh, and your blog sucks ass.

Just signed on and noticed the comment, Lisa. Don't you think we should leave it up as a testament to the intelligence and eloquence of the anti-Jesus-lovin' contingent?

Ms. Kate Marie, I don't know how to answer that question.

People stop by your blog often with views that differ from the contributors. The discussions have been lively and informative, yet there is always a level of decorum that is kept out of mutual respect.

Mr. Colstone's final comment would have bothered me regardless of the topic of the original post. I don't think it has to do with whether one believes in Jesus or not - it's just language I consider rude.

I'm not offended if the comment stays up or is removed. I'm simply baffled that someone would write something like that.

Hi Lisa,

"Mr. Colstone's final comment would have bothered me regardless of the topic of the original post. I don't think it has to do with whether one believes in Jesus or not - it's just language I consider rude."

-- I'm actually in complete agreement with you, Lisa.

And for what it's worth, I don't think the comment has anything to do with believing in Jesus, either. I was merely pointing out that the banality and idiocy of the comment discredits Mr. Colstone's "position" (such as it is).

Anyway, maybe I should give "Mr. Colstone" one warning (the same kind I give my kids). Dissent all you want from the opinions expressed here, but please do so with a modicum of decorum. Substance would be nice, too. Further crude comments will be deleted without warning and without compunction. My blog, my prerogative.

And thanks, Lisa, for the implicit compliment to the tone of mutual respect on this blog. I think you're right that we should strive to keep it that way.

I agree. Leave it up. A difference of opinion is no excuse for a lack of manners. The gentleman probably stumbled on the blog while googling "Kathy Griffin naked pictures"
And, for the record, since our blog does not possess lips or a mouth, it is wholly incapable of engaging in the accused activity.

What 'Chuck Colstone' was really saying:

"Look at ME! Look at ME! I'm posting MY OWN comments on a blog! I'm not afraid to sign MY OWN name to MY OWN words, either! See: 'CHUCK COLSTONE'! And with a genuine link, too! To Yahoo! That's to clue you in to MY self-esteem! Whenever I think of MYSELF, I think: "YAHOO!" So, I link MYSELF to Yahoo! And I always end my posts with something witty and original!"

That's my reading of the words posted by 'Chuck Colstone', whose name -- by the way -- doesn't come up on Google, though a long-dead "Charles Colstone" does appear, so perhaps this medium is channeling the deceased but informal "Charles 'Chuck' Colstone," aka 'Chuckie', come back to tell us all.

Chuckie, get a life ... and a girlfriend (if you've really got stones of coal).

Is there really too much "Jesus lovin'"? How does one measure such a thing? Don't tell me you got one a' them new-fangled Jesus Lovin' meters from ebay! Is that sucker off the charts or what? Do tell! Details, man! Details!
