Morning Report
I find this story of the alleged poisoning of Ukrainian opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko to be fascinating and the stuff of movies or fiction. If true, it's sure to catapult him to victory in the presidential run-off.
I guess this makes Swift Boats and National Guard Records look pretty mild.
Today is a big day for Scott Peterson as his mother pleads for his life before the jury that convicted him of murdering his wife and child.
I've always been a supporter of the death penalty but I don't rule out the possibility that an impassioned plea from a mother not to kill her child could have an impact on me as a juror. However, I think ultimately my initial sympathies toward her would harden when later reflecting upon the harrowing and horrific final moments of his wife's life and the equally horrific, instinctive and hopeless struggle for life of his unborn child. My take on the death penalty is that there are some acts so heinous that the only commensurate punishment is that the person who committed them not be allowed to live. It may be the closest thing to closure that Lacy's family may ever have and they're entitled to it.
I would vote death and I think the jury will too.
And I see Michael Moore is still trying to figure out just why John Kerry lost. Tee hee. And what's the corpulent consumer of things Hostess' assessment? -- Don't drink right now lest you spit it out on your nice computer -- Moore says Democrats need to embrace Hollywood:
"For the last month, we've had to listen to a lot of conservative pundits talk about how Democrats need to run away from Hollywood," Moore told reporters before addressing the Los Angeles World Affairs Council.
The Los Angeles World Affairs Council? How'd you like that group to be running things? eesh.
"It's actually the opposite," he said, according to Reuters. "Democrats need to embrace Hollywood because this is where they need to come to learn how to tell a story."
Come to Hollywood to learn how to tell a story? Ishtar, Gigli, Yentl, Howard The Duck...Let's hope the DNC takes Moore's advice.
Here we go again -- How the Holiday Fairy stole Kwanza? It seems a Salem, MA elementary school is taking some serious poetic license with Dr. Seuss:
Every year, Ayers Elementary School puts on a holiday play. This year, they're doing an adaptation of Dr. Seuss' classic book "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". Except in the school's version, the Grinch doesn't steal Christmas, he steals all the holidays, including Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. He doesn't dress up as Santa Claus, either, but as "the holiday fairy", complete with wings and a tutu.
That may not be quite what Dr. Seuss imagined, but then, it wasn't exactly a religious story to begin with. And besides, Principal Sue Charochak said, the play is nothing new. The school performed it three years ago, before Charochak was principal, without any controversy.
"It's not the original story to begin with. It's an adaptation," Charochak said. "I think it's creative."
Sigh...All the Whos down in Whoville like Hanuukkah, Kwanzaa, Groundhog Day, Secretaries Day, Earth Day a lot...but the Holiday Fairy who flitted, plie'ed, and arabesqued just north of Whoville did not...
Need I say more?
And finally -- "Look Daddy. Teacher says every time a bell rings an angel gets its wings." Hmmm. One never knows.

Happy Hanukkah to all of our Jewish Friends.
The Heck with "Happy Holidays".
I am leaning against the death penalty as I grow older on pragmatic grounds. How many of these penalties are ever carried out. . and at what cost? You reach a point where it might almost be cheaper just to put them all away for life. Besides, for Scott, I would think that life in prision might be a worse penalty for Mr. I love Golf Playboy philanderer.
I would only reserve the death penalty for very unique situations. . like a murderer serving life who kills in prison. . and people who drive slow in the fast lane.
Don't forget people who turn on their left turn signal at the red light well after you've already stopped behind them in the left lane.
I'm not opposed to the death penalty but I like the image of Scott Peterson sitting in jail every day for the rest of a long healthy life unable to tomcat around like he planned. Three-five-ten years later thinking every day about all the women he could have had if only he had just divorced Laci. Don't rule out jailhouse justice, either.

Oh, I love the idea of angels hanging out over the Nation's Capital! God Bless America! Stand beside her and guide her and protect her from all terrorists!
Happy Hanukkah to all my Jewish friends, acquaintances, and not yet friends!
