"You'll Shoot Your Eye Out"

So said the parents in A Christmas Story. The father was played by Darren McGavin , who died in LA on Saturday at 83.

Man, he plays such a great dad character in that movie--probably one of the most believable movie dads ever...

Oh, that's sad. I *love* him in that movie.

"It's a major award!"

"Fra-gee-lay!"

And the great scene where Ralphie discovers the Red Ryder in the corner, and where Darrin McGavin pantomimes loading the gun along with Ralphie.

Sniff.

Darren McGavin..he'll always be Ralphie's Dad from Christmas Story to most of us.. but he had MANY memorable roles over his long and wonderful career.
As the no good gambler Gus Sands in "THE NATURAL"...playing Mike Hammer ...and Carl Kolcheck on the "Night Stalker" series in the 70's...the guy has a resume that is a mile long. He was never the big huge star just a working actor, the grinder...the guy who all of us could identify with on some level. And talented. So damn talented in every part he played.
I'll always think of him yelling
"Bumpesesssssss".....and those dogs taking his turkey... oh god..that guy was great....RIP Mr. McGavin

"Some men are Babtists, others Catholics; my old man, was an Oldsmobile man..."

"Dadgummit, blowout!!!"

"Sons a bitches! Bumpuses!"

"Why...they could have sent the deed for Cripe's sakes!"

"He worked in profanity the way other artists might work in oils or clay. It was his true medium; a master..."

KM, I'm in agreement with you on getting choked up at the old man pantamiming the loading of the Red Ryder.

"I can't be sure...but I thought I heard the sound of taps being played...gently..."

Here's to a taps being played for the "old man". I hope somewhere you are holding your "oiled blue steel beauty; pringing ducks on the wing and getting off spectacular hip-shots."
