And how are people like you allowed to vote?

Question asked, in all seriousness, at the book club I recently joined: "Here's something I don't get. I thought that our constitution requires the separation of church and state. How is Huckabee allowed to run for President?"

I'm not voting for Huckabee, obviously, but I felt a twinge of sympathy for him and his supporters when I heard that.

KM, what kind of people are you hangin' with these days?

Huckabee Hater and Kristall as in Kristallnacht? Yeesh.

Get out of Cow Town and find some new friends.

LOL, CIV!

I have to admit I was surprised to have joined a book club -- in Kansas! -- in which I was the only Republican. But I'm used to being, in some contexts, the only Republican in the crowd. I used to be "closeted," but I'm older and more cantankerous and care less these days about people forming the wrong impression of me or treating me like an oddity or an exotic.

I'm still slightly surprised at the level of provincialism and outright ignorance among people who think of themselves as the champions of free thinking and enlightenment. I could tell lots more stories about my book club evening, believe me.

As for Kristall, she was in the book club. I met her at a free trial of a martial arts class. I wondered for a while whether she was some sort of skinhead, but after closer examination I decided she was merely insane.

And I'm looking for another karate class.

That lack of sophistication in that quote reminded me of the scene from The Right Stuff, when the ditzy gal asks the grizzled woman bar owner about the photos of flyers on the wall. "How do you get your picture on that wall?" "You gotta die, honey!"

Correction of typo: Kristall *wasn't* in the book club.

Great quotation from The Right Stuff, Stewdog!

You'd better take up martial arts, if you're going to run with an ignorant but righteous liberal crowd.
