What Unites Us
I've spent a great deal of time in recent posts bickering with my dear friend Madman of Chu, so I've decided to devote a post to a list of some things that unite us.
Here's to you, Madman of Chu.
* We love Fiddler on the Roof and Les Miserables.
* We love Casablanca, It's a Wonderful Life, and The Wizard of Oz.
* We both think Sam Donaldson is a fake-haired freak.
* We are the only two people in the world who can identify the source of the following movie quotation: "This shirt is disgusting!"
* We both have adorable children and patient, wonderful spouses.
* We both agree that my husband Sadeeq spends too much time with his list of "things to do between things."
* We agree that A Stranger Among Us stank on ice.
* We like Teddy Roosevelt and The Wind and The Lion.
* We love The Four Feathers and The Man Who Would Be King.
* We kind of liked The Blair Witch Project (though it's possible that I felt queasy, not because the movie was really creepy, but because of the hand-held camera).
* We agree that anti-intellectualism is an exasperating and troubling phenomenon (though perhaps we disagree sometimes about what constitutes anti-intellectualism).
* We love our country.

CIV thought at last there was some hope of understanding the Madman, but then discovered that KM was referring to the MOVIE versions of Les Miserables and The Man Who Would be King.
CIV has just struggled through reading both and feels as if a reward is due. (Perhaps a crown?) But both were read for fun, so the reward was in the reading. And CIV will never understand either the Madman nor the arguments he has with KM.
(CIV is not anti-intellectual, just not smart enough to qualify as an intellectual.)
Dear Kate Marie,
How can you blanket-characterize us that way? We're more diverse than you make out.
Actually, to your list I would add-
~We are two of a very small group of people that are aware, if a certain H.H. goes missing, he just might be found on a traffic island somewhere in the Boston suburbs
~We both know the dangers of leaving Sadeeq, a bottle of Ernest & Julio Gallo, and a box of Junior Mints in the same room unsupervised
~We both know who that woman with Dillinger was
~Both of us would still fear nature if it weren't for Redwood Bear
~Unlike the second century scholar Zheng Xuan, we both understand that the Sages had no Goat, but that they were about the last men who could say so.
Hey, C.I.V.! Keep trying for that common ground. I'm pretty sure Madman loved the book version of Les Miserables, too (which, I must admit, I've never read) -- but I was actually referring to the musical version of Les Miserables.
And yes, of course you're smart enough to qualify as an intellectual (though of course some who are called "intellectuals" aren't really very smart, but that's beside the point). By anti-intellectual I mean someone who is hostile to intellectual pursuits.
Madman,
I considered including a few of the very items you listed, but I forgot about Redwood Bear! Thanks for a great laugh.
